Landmark Docklands Project, Dublin, Ireland
This competition entry received international acknowledgement for tower design submission. Sponsored by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority in Dublin, Ireland the competition was part of a plan to revitalize an industrialized waterfront section in Dublin known as the Docklands.
The city’s goal was to develop an sixteen-story landmark tower in the Docklands as a new gateway to Dublin. The new tower was to offer a mixture of residential, commercial, retail, and dining space. It was also anticipated the top two floors of the tower would house an exclusive recording studio for the rock group U2.
The centerpiece of our design, a 16-story cylindrical tower, was inspired by the gasometers that once dominated the Docklands skyline. Gasometers were giant tanks built in the 1800s to store gas used to fuel the city of Dublin’s lighting and cooking needs. Much like the building we designed, the gasometer with the simplicity of its geometric forms and the strength of its reinforcing rings, conveys a sense of strength while never forgetting the fragility and volatility of its content.
